The International Council of Museums (ICOM), in an effort to highlight the role of museums in modern society, established 18 May as International Museum Day<\/a> in 1977. The message of this anniversary is that museums should become agents of cultural exchange ‘for the purpose of enhancing education, promoting mutual understanding, peace and cooperation among peoples’.<\/p>\n

Each year, alongside the general message of the celebration, a special theme related to museums and their role in modern society is explored in all ICOM member countries, through talks, exhibitions, meetings and other events.<\/p>\n

On the occasion of the celebration, the Hellenic National Committee of ICOM is organising a variety of cultural events throughout Greece during the month of May. It also honours each year one or more Greek museums, where the main event of the celebration takes place.<\/p>\n

The theme of the celebration of International Museum Day 2023 is “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

In an era marked by constant transformation, museums find themselves at the forefront of change, navigating a dynamic landscape shaped by shifting global events and evolving societal needs. This year\u2019s International Museum Day theme, The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities<\/em>, invites us to reimagine the role of museums as essential connectors, innovators, and stewards of cultural identity. Aligned with the 27th ICOM General Conference in Dubai, this theme underscores the critical conversations ahead\u2014exploring how museums can safeguard intangible heritage, harness the energy of youth, and adapt to new technological frontiers. Together, we will chart a collective path toward empowering museums and communities to thrive in the face of rapid change.<\/p>\n

Museums are more than spaces of preservation\u2014they are active participants in shaping sustainable and inclusive communities. This year\u2019s theme aligns with three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):<\/p>\n
